Member News. Microfiction due this week!!
Good afternoon Geelong Cereal Community!
This is a quick update to let you know about a few things that are happening here over the coming weeks.
Serials
We want to start by thanking everyone who has contributed to Geelong Cereal so far. We have seven currently running serials, with more being planned, which is absolutely fantastic. If you have a serial in mind, don't be shy – let us know what you're planning. Episodes can be as short as 500 words up to 3,000 words with a minimum of six episodes per serial and you can choose to publish weekly, fortnightly or monthly.
Microfiction
Our first edition of Microfiction Monday was a roaring success, and we are doing it again this coming Monday 29 June, so get your microfiction in as soon as you can! We’ll publish anything submitted by the end of Saturday 27 June but earlier would be greatly appreciated. Pictures to complement your entry are welcomed, just be sure to check the submission guidelines first.
Two sentence horror stories continue to be popular this time around, with some people choosing to continue on from their last submission and write Two Sentence Serials! What an awesome idea – these are shaping up to be a lot of fun. There are non-horror two sentence stories coming in too; why not try a Two Sentence Mystery, a Two Sentence Romance, or a Two Sentence Battle Royale (OK that last one sounds like a challenge. In fact now that we've said it, someone is going to have to do it!).
Of course we are also publishing any microfiction up to 300 words and we have someone writing a serial in this category too! It appears our love for serial fiction is infectious. Mwahaha!
We couldn’t be more pleased.
Fifty Word Reviews
We have also had a surprise entry of a fifty word gig review. We love that concept so much that we’re adding that to the Monday Microfiction (Thanks, Adam!).
Send us your fifty word reviews – it doesn’t have to be a gig – review a book, a movie, a particularly nice bunch of grapes, or your cat’s singing performance at 3am. Review whatever you like, just get creative, and do it in fifty words! OK, it’s not fiction, but it’s micro, and it’s fun.
Introducing Audio Recordings
With so much serial fiction going on, it’s time to introduce audio links so that our authors can read their serials out loud, or provide sound effects or music to go with what they have written.
In addition to improving accessibility for vision impaired readers, audio links are also great for people who struggle to focus on reading for extended periods of time, due to ADHD or other reasons. Reading words while simultaneously listening to them can help enormously with focus and recall.
We invite anyone who would like to read their serial or story aloud, or add an audio component, to send us an email. Alternatively, if you don’t want to read your own work but you would like someone else to record it, let us know!
The Good, the Bad and the I’m Sorry, What?
This is an upcoming monthly feature where we ask a panel of writers three questions (two questions about the ups and downs of writing, and one completely off the wall question just for fun).
If you are a writer and you would like to be included, let us know! Submissions for the first edition are closing next week so if you would like the questions sent to you, let us know. We will be keeping a close eye on the inbox.
Log in and comment!
Finally, and I can’t stress this enough folks, log in and comment on people’s work to let them know you are reading and enjoying it! If we want people to keep writing stories for us we have to let them know we are enjoying them!
Geelong Writers Members Night
Don’t forget Geelong Writers Members night is tonight 24 June at Industry 26 on Pako, from 6pm-8:30pm. Tonight will feature an exciting book launch- Pam Swanborough's Things With Teeth by Moonlight: A Miscellany.
If you are a member, we look forward to seeing you there, and if you are not a member, why not come along and check it out?! Everyone is welcome.
Keep reading and writing through this dreadful cold winter folks, and stay tuned for more updates!
-The Geelong Cereal Team.
PS: The Geelong Cereal site is still under construction and some links and features are not yet fully operational. Please rest assured we are continually upgrading and improving the site and also, consider joining the Geelong Cereal team and help us keep things running smoothly!
