Introducing Brett J Cole!

Brett J Cole is a Geelong West based writer of both children’s books and adult fiction. Along with poetry, prose, musings and art, he also sometimes writes a weird hybrid of writing and skit-humour that he calls “Skiterature”, which are short pieces often very much formed around wordplay.
He lives with his adult daughter and four cats, with the catio being his main “study”even though one cat absolutely considers his laptop to be their nemesis. He also dabbles in no end of arty pursuits, which is equally daunting because of said cat.

With a background of Early Childhood teaching across 12 years (currently on hiatus due to burnout and a new adventure of addressing ADHD finally) Brett was also recognised as being Autistic late in life and draws on both experiences in the
children’s books and articles he writes to hopefully advocate for Neurodivergent children as much as for the adults they’ll one day become.

Given the intent of the children’s books in assisting emotional wellbeing, especially with navigating what are often very big topics for children, he also makes them freely available to those who they might benefit.

As for the adult fiction, his works are a very mixed bag of genres ranging from the urbane realities of life to horror, sci-fi and fantasy, often intertwining to highlight social issues he’s passionate about.

As an Autistic, Brett also considers writing itself to be one of his stims and has long used it as a means of filtering and making sense of the world, something that made much more sense later in life having been one of those “library kids”. One of his greatest inspirations from an early age was Rod Serling’s Twilight Zone as an example of how the shortest of tales could often move hearts and minds.

He also writes awkwardly in the third person whenever making a Bio and hopes that this is an okay effort, lol
