FAQs

If I submit my work to you, what happens to the intellectual property?

Your work is your work. When you publish something on Geelong Cereal, you keep all the rights to that work. We don't pay you for it, we don't licence it from you, we are only sharing it for you with your permission. You can share it on other sites and with other magazines, there is no exclusivity with Geelong Cereal. Plus, you can remove your work any time you want. Just let us know. And, make sure what you ask us to publish is your work and not someone else's. Original works only, please.

What if someone sees my work on Geelong Cereal and wants to contact me about it?

If someones contacts us about contacting you, we will take their details and pass them on to you. We will never give out your contact details.

Do you make any money out of publishing my work and if so, can I have some of that money?

Good question. The short answer is no, we won't give you any money. Here's the longer answer: at the moment we have a subscription model for Geelong Cereal which includes two types of subscription. One of those is a free subscription and one is a paid subscription, both grant the same access. The paid subscription is for anyone interested in providing some funds to keep the magazine going. As you can appreciate, most people subscribe for free, so we only have a little bit of income which we use to pay the bills.

Why do I have to subscribe to see most of your stuff?

Another good question. Most of what we publish requires you to have a subscription to view it. Some content we keep public, for example all first chapters of our stories, but yes, most is for subscribers only. Subscription, which is free, helps us track what is popular and helps us get a sense of our audience engagement. It also means that when we publish something, it goes straight to your email, so you don't have to check the website all the time. It's the best way for us to connect artists with an audience.

If I send you something to publish, is there any reason you will refuse?

No, not really. At Geelong Cereal we make no judgement of what you send us. We try to publish everything. However, if you are submitting creative writing we do ask that make sure it has been proof-read for spelling and grammar. Also, if you are submitting music, we will only publish good quality recordings. So, if you have recorded something quickly on you phone, we will likely decline it. There may also be some circumstances where we refuse to publish works that are offensive; this is a tricky one for us because we don't want to censor artists, but sometimes it is necessary.
